Concomitant Patterns in Avian and Mammalian Body Length Changes in Denmark Ecology and Society
Schmidt, Niels Martin; Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University; nms@kvl.dk; Jensen, Per Moestrup; Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University; pmj@kvl.dk.
We gathered length data on 61 Danish breeding birds from the past 200 years, and related the pattern of change to present body mass and other ecological parameters. Body mass was the only parameter significantly correlated with the rate of change, and the emerging pattern in the rate of change followed the island rule. That is, smaller species have become larger and vice versa, while the medium-sized species remain essentially unchanged. The suggested optimal body mass was around 85 g. Though orders of magnitude lower, the pattern in avian body size change was similar to that of Danish mammals. Our analyses suggest that increasing habitat fragmentation leads to altered body size towards being medium-sized in Danish vertebrates. The changing landscape,...

Linking Keystone Species and Functional Groups: A New Operational Definition of the Keystone Species Concept Ecology and Society
Davic, Robert D; Ohio Environmental Protection Agency; r_davic@yahoo.com.
The concept of the "keystone species" is redefined to allow for the a priori prediction of these species within ecosystems. A keystone species is held to be a strongly interacting species whose top-down effect on species diversity and competition is large relative to its biomass dominance within a functional group. This operational definition links the community importance of keystone species to a specific ecosystem process, e.g., the regulation of species diversity, within functional groups at lower trophic levels that are structured by competition for a limited resource. The a priori prediction of keystone species has applied value for the conservation of natural areas.

JUVENILE HEIGHT GROWTH RATES AND SORTING OF THREE NOTHOFAGUS SPECIES ON AN ALTITUDINAL GRADIENT Gayana Botánica
Cárdenas Garrido,Cecilia; Lusk,Christopher H..
It has been argued that if the cost of investment in cold resistance mechanisms detracts significantly from growth rates, then height growth tradeoffs should control species sorting on latitudinal temperature gradients. Applying the same logic to altitudinal temperature gradients, it can be predicted that species' upper altitudinal limits will be fixed by their degree of cold resistance, whereas the lower altitudinal limits of species growing higher up will be set by competition from faster-growing thermophilous species. We tested this prediction for three Nothofagus species on an altitudinal gradient (1,100 - 1,700 m) near Termas de Chillán, on the lower western slopes of the Andean Cordillera. We used retrospective methods to measure height increment...

Characteristics of muskmelon fruits in relation to temporary row cover and the number of fruits Horticultura Brasileira
Pereira,Auderlan M; Queiroga,Roberto CF; Pereira,Francisco Hevilásio F; Silva,Zaqueu L; Santos,Everaldo F.
ABSTRACT The muskmelon plants allow several ways to manipulate sources/drains ratio. The objective of this work was to evaluate characteristics of the productivity and quality of Cantaloupe melon fruits due to the temporary use of row cover and the number of fruits per plant. The experiment was carried out from August to December 2014, at Universidade Federal de Campina Grande (UFCG), Paraiba State, Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks with treatments allocated in split plots 5x3, with four replicates. The authors reported permanence time of the row cover at different times in the plot {20, 24, 28, 32, and 36 days after transplanting (DAT)} and, in the subplots, the number of fruits per plant (plants with one fruit, plants with two fruits...

Daily variation of zooplankton abundance and evenness in the Rosana reservoir, Brazil: biotic and abiotic inferences Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Takahashi,Érica M.; Lansac-Tôha,Fábio A.; Dias,Juliana D.; Bonecker,Claudia C..
The zooplankton community presents stochastic temporal fluctuation and heterogeneous spatial variation determined by the relationships among the organisms and environmental conditions. We predicted that the temporal and spatial zooplankton distribution is heterogeneous and discrete, respectively, and that the daily variation of most abundant species is related to environmental conditions, specifically the availability of resources. Zooplankton samples were collected daily at three sampling stations in a lateral arm of the Rosana Reservoir (SP/PR). The zooplankton did not present significant differences in abundance and evenness among sampling stations, but the temporal variation of these attributes was significant. Abiotic variables and algal resource...

The aggregation of Chauliognathus species (Coleoptera, Cantharidae) and its possible role for coexistence and mimicry Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Machado,Vilmar; Araújo,Aldo Mellender de.
The relative population sizes of a species complex of Chauliognathus are reported, as well as their spatial distribution associated with different patches of food plants. Field work was done at Fazenda Santa Isabel, municipality of Guaíba, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The results suggest that two mechanisms account for the reduction in food competition among the species involved: one is asynchrony in the appearance of the species in the area, and the other is aggregation in different patches of food plants. Since the species here reported show a similar colour pattern (yellow-black) the possibility of the occurrence of serial mimicry in this complex of species is dicussed.

When everything is not everywhere but species evolve: an alternative method to model adaptive properties of marine ecosystems ArchiMer
Sauterey, Boris; Ward, Ben A.; Follows, Michael J.; Bowler, Chris; Claessen, David.
The functional and taxonomic biogeography of marine microbial systems reflects the current state of an evolving system. Current models of marine microbial systems and biogeochemical cycles do not reflect this fundamental organizing principle. Here, we investigate the evolutionary adaptive potential of marine microbial systems under environmental change and introduce explicit Darwinian adaptation into an ocean modelling framework, simulating evolving phytoplankton communities in space and time. To this end, we adopt tools from adaptive dynamics theory, evaluating the fitness of invading mutants over annual timescales, replacing the resident if a fitter mutant arises. Using the evolutionary framework, we examine how community assembly, specifically the...

Resource Competition Affects Plankton Community Structure; Evidence from Trait-Based Modeling ArchiMer
Sourisseau, Marc; Le Guennec, Valerie; Le Gland, Guillaume; Plus, Martin; Chapelle, Annie.
Understanding the phenology of phytoplankton species is still a challenge and despite a lot of theoretical work on competition for ressources this process is under-represented in deterministic models. To study the main driver of the species selection, we thus used a trait-based model that keeps phenotypic variability through physiological trait parameterization. We next validate the results by using a key species, the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum. Due to their monitoring, we show that harmful algae are ideal models for studying ecological niches and for contributing to this more global challenge. As a first step, a dimensionless model of an estuary (France) was built with water temperature and water exchanges deduced from a hydro-dynamic model....

Competition for food reduces disease susceptibility in a marine invertebrate ArchiMer
Pernet, Fabrice; Lugue, Klervi; Petton, Bruno.
Competition between organisms interfere in host and pathogen dynamics in ways that are difficult to predict. By one side, competitors can reduce the food supply and cause nutritional stress. Such stress could further modulate the susceptibility to infection by altering immune response or metabolic rate of the host. Alternatively, competitors may trap pathogens before they reach the focal host, and therefore reduce, enhance, or have no effect on infection according to the competitor's susceptibility to the infection. To better understand how competition influences host and pathogen interactions, we experimentally assessed the relative importance of competition for pathogens and resources on the severity of a viral disease infecting the Pacific oyster...

Response to domestication and selection for growth in the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in separate and mixed tanks ArchiMer
Vandeputte, Marc; Dupont Nivet, M; Haffray, P; Chavanne, H; Cenadelli, S; Parati, K; Vidal, Marie-odile; Vergnet, Alain; Chatain, Beatrice.
Selective breeding of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) receives a growing interest, as the estimated heritability of growth is medium to high. In this study, we compared the offspring of four groups of sea bass sires, mated with the same wild dams: wild (W), first generation of domestication (D), first generation of mass selection for length (M), first generation of PROSPER-like selection for length (P). The comparison was done both in replicated tanks (separate rearing) and in mixed tanks (mixed rearing) where sire origins were recovered by genotyping of eight microsatellite markers. Weight, length and growth rate were measured from day 238 post-fertilization (69 g mean weight) to day 611 post-fertilization (390 g mean weight). Both in mixed and...
